Perhaps after a certain number of posts you split it into pages?
The longer the thread the more time it takes to load.
For example my 'Rate the above poster's avatar' thread has about 268 replies, and it takes a long time to load:
http://www.nonoba.com/forum/general/rate-the-above-persons-avatar
Other examples of long threads are:
the "Corrupted Wish" thread:
http://www.nonoba.com/forum/general/corrupted-wish
and also the "Evil Vending Machine":
http://www.nonoba.com/forum/general/evil-vending-machine

This should also be applied to comments. It would solve the 'disappearing comments' problem too!

Yeah, not only does it lag your comp, it takes ages to scroll down.
